I Wish You Were (Not) There

“I Wish You Were (Not) There” was an interactive video installation that was exhibited at Gallery #2 in San Jose State University. The artwork featured a live web streaming video from Times Square, New York, which was projected onto a 12-inch x 16-inch screen. Additionally, a specially designed panel was hung in front of the projector screen, which consisted of 12 motion detectors and was made of clear acrylic resin. The panel was designed to look like a Japanese Shoji screen, with 12 small square windows cut strategically into it. Transparent-level changeable UMU film (formerly known as NCAP film) was fit into each window, and each film was connected to one of the 12 motion detectors. As movement was detected, the corresponding film transitioned from opaque to transparent, allowing the video image to be seen through the panel. To view the entire video image clearly, all UMU films had to be set to transparent mode.
